NEW AMD RYZEN MOBILE PROCESSORS
A couple of weeks back, we released our review on the long awaited AMD Ryzen (Raven Ridge) APUs. They were nothing short of impressive. Yesterday, we were invited to an event where they unveiled three Ryzen laptops; one each from Acer, Asus and Lenovo.
TRULY MOBILE
All 3 guest speakers emphasized on market trends for laptops to go smaller and lighter.
Peter Chambers, AMD Director of Consumer Sales in APJ, stated that the new Ryzen 5 2500U processor will allow OEM partners to design laptops that are smaller and lighter than before without compromising performance. He said that:
“This new offering in the mobile PC market is the result of our understanding of customers and the technology they need to enhance their lifestyle. Ryzen™ Mobile processors will offer leadership performance for everyday activities, multi-tasking, and advanced workloads alike, all with an amazing battery life.”
Jeffery from Acer introduced 2 products – the Acer Swift 3 and Nitro 5, the former being a thin and light laptop while the latter is a gaming laptop. According to him, Acer will be bringing in more AMD powered products in the near future.
“The Swift 3 has wonderful battery life, up to 10-hours, together with the new AMD Ryzen 5 processor” said Jeffery. “The new Nitro 5 is coming soon with either a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processor”, he added.
The final speaker was Lenovo Malaysia Product Manager – Gavin Wong. Recently, Lenovo has been really steadily and successfully releasing laptops for different market segments. Gavin was there to introduce the Ideapad 720S.
“The S behind the model number stands for Slim, a key feature of the Ideapad 720S. This laptop with the new Ryzen processor gives you uncompromising performance whenever you need it.” said Gavin.
RYZEN POWERED LAPTOPS
Acer Swift 3
The Acer Swift 3 sits in the middle of the pack with a 15″ screen size that is in Full HD (1080p). With a IPS panel and a RX 540 GPU with 2GB GDDR5, this seems to be a laptop for people who work on the go. Content creators and creative professionals alike, should really consider this Ryzen powered Acer Swift if they want to work on the go. Oh, and did I mention that it has a 10-hour battery life?
Lenovo Ideapad 720S
The 13 inch Lenovo Ideapad 720S is the lightest and thinnest out of the three. At 1.14kg and only 13.6mm thick, this laptop manages to squeeze in the same performance from either a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processor, a 1080p IPS screen and up to 512GB of NVMe storage. Lenovo states that this comes with 9 hours of battery life. If that’s true, this is a truly impressive and sleek machine.
ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC
Finally, as a bonus, we have the ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC. This thing is a total beast with a full on Ryzen 7 1700, a Radeon RX580 with 4GB of GDDR5 and up to 16GB of Dual Channel DDR4 Ram at 2400Hz. This laptop is slighter heavier at around 3kg. It comes with 2 display options, IPS 1080p screens 60Hz or 120Hz with Free Sync! With the dual channel memory and beefier form factor, this laptop is definitely meant for gamers.
